Expanse

The extreme scale of many examples of Chinese architecture seem to imply the strength and power of the culture. The sheer size of works such as the great wall or the forbidden city is an expression not only of the will and determination of countless individuals to complete such a work, but also the the fear and reverence of a single entity which drives the project. Mao's own likeness set upon the entrance to the ancient forbidden city brings forth a question of the power of the one individual versus that of the people. Either way, respect is demanded.
